The New York Jets have hired quarterback Michael Vick and Mark Sanchez released.
Michael Vick, who has spent the last five seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, was a free agent. It will be reunited with offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, who helped quarterback to know the best season of his career with the Eagles in 2010. Michael Vick has been bothered by injuries the last three seasons and he had lost his starting job in favor of Nick Foles last fall.
It could challenge the Jets starting Geno Smith, who has done well in the last stretch of his first season in the NFL, but finished the season with 12 touchdowns and 21 interceptions.
“He’s a very talented player who has won several games in this league, including in the playoffs, Mornhinweg said about Michael Vick in comments published on the website of the team. He is respected by his teammates and opponents. He will have the chance to fight for playing time and push Geno Smith to become as good as possible. Michael can play at a high level and win games if we call on him. ”
Michael Vick, who was invited to the Pro Bowl four times, has been considered the most dangerous player in the NFL, particularly during his first six seasons in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons.
His playing career was abruptly interrupted for two seasons in 2007, when he pleaded guilty to charges related to a dogfighting scandal. He spent 21 months behind bars and two others under house arrest. Since its release in 2009, Michael Vick has worked for charities that fight against the exploitation of animals.
He signed a contract with the Eagles in 2009 and received the return of the year according to the AP in 2010, in addition to being invited to the Pro Bowl. Mornhinweg with the coordinator, Michael Vick tallied 3018 yards that season, with 21 touchdown passes, a career high, and only six interceptions. He also scored nine major ground, also a career high.
Sanchez’s departure is not a surprise. He had to fight for the No. 1 quarterback with Smith before last season, but the competition ended when Sanchez injured his right shoulder during a preseason game.
He missed the entire 2013 season after undergoing surgery. It was still flowing three seasons of his contract, but its impact on the payroll of $ 13.1 million was too high for the Jets consider keeping his services as a reservist.
“I would like to thank Mark for all he has done for this team and for me, said head coach Rex Ryan through a statement. We were recruits during the same season and have been successful since our inception, becoming the first quarterback coach duo recruits to reach the final of Association during their first two seasons. We have had several experiences together and I always enjoyed Mark.
“He’s a great player, a great teammate and I wish him only the best.”
The Jets had made a transaction at the 2009 draft in order to select Sanchez fifth. He became the starting team in his first season and led the Jets in the final of the American Association during its first two seasons.
Sanchez tallied 12,092 yards and 68 touchdowns in 62 games with the Jets. He also suffered 69 interceptions.
Raiders Acquire Quarterback Matt Schaub
Both teams have completed the transaction on Friday, after Schaub had passed a medical examination.
The Raiders will hope that Schaub rebound after a disappointing 2013 season with the Texans. It will take the place of Terrelle Pryor and Matt McGloin, who shared the job with the Raiders last season.
Schaub was the starting quarterback for the Texans from 2007 to 2013, when it was set aside in favor of Case Keenum after a poor start to the campaign. Aged 32, Schaub was invited to the Pro Bowl twice, the last time in 2012.
“A new beginning can do many things for a player and a team and I’m one of those guys said Schaub. Last year did not go as planned when you look at my track record before that. I am happy to know a new start and I’m looking forward to my new adventure in Oakland.”
