Shortly after Ismayl Sillakh inflicted a severe knock-out in the second round on November 30 last, the WBO light heavyweight Sergey Kovalev challenged WBC champion of the class, Adonis Stevenson.
During the Gala, after a win over Tony Bellew, Superman had said he had no problem with the idea of facing Kovalev, but he had other plans in mind for by then. In particular, he wants to face the IBF champion and future Hall of Famer Bernard Hopkins boxing or Carl Froch, who reigns as king and master of all 168 books.
In a recent interview with BoxingScene, Russian and his team argued that Stevenson seemed in no hurry to face the slugger and Kovalev could be the one who would dethrone the Quebecois.
Stevenson found these comments rather amusing.
“I am the No. 1 heavyweight division and I’m not afraid of anyone. I faced a big name sports division heavyweight Chad Dawson in, who was the champion. Thereafter, I immediately faced Tavoris Cloud. One has boxing skills, the other never gives up and hits hard. You say I do not want to face Kovalev? (Laughs). It makes no sense. ”
Stevenson also said that Kovalev was on his list of potential fights for 2014, although it primarily Hopkins in sight.
“I would like to face Bernard Hopkins because he is a big name in the sport and I would also like to face Carl Froch due to its reputation in England. When I was at 168 pounds, I was the No. 1 contender, but the fight never happened. Now I’m 175 pounds champion and I would like to measure Carl Froch and Bernard Hopkins. Kovalev won a few fights and is now champion. It will be my opponent in one of my three fights scheduled for this year. I want to tell fans that the fight will take place. My developer is working on it with Main Events. Kovalev number of my promoter, all he has to do is call. This is not a problem. ”
GYM promoter Yvon Michel, abounded in the same direction as Stevenson stating that Kovalev was in the crosshairs of Quebec boxer. “Adonis wants to leave no doubt about the identity of the best boxer of the class and is ready to face anyone who claims otherwise. ”
Michel said he had discussed with the management of HBO and a fight between Stevenson and Kovalev was in the cards for 2014. “It surprised me that this is the next, but it could be his second or his third fight of the year. In our planning, we planned three fights this year. ”
Those who are impatient with the idea to know the next opponent Stevenson will soon know. “We should announce about a week after the fight Lucian Bute and Jean Pascal. We will have a good indication of where we are going. ”
Stevenson could possibly cross swords with the destroyer of Lucian Bute. “In the case of Carl Froch, we did not despair, for his early promoter told us that Froch would make a rematch with George Groves. However, this fight is broken and it becomes available. ”
Stevenson seek to find a place among the top five pound for pound fighters in the world over the next 12 months, said Yvon Michel.
“I expected a good year in 2013, but it was exceptional, said boss GYM. Adonis grew a fight to each other from the moment he could count on greater resources for training camps. It has evolved. Before, he was a pure hitter, now it has become a brilliant boxer with nice skills. “
