Australian Open: Serena Williams Eliminated By Ana Ivanovic

The World No. 1 was beaten Ana Ivanovic in the fourth round of the Australian Open seeded No. 14 in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 on Sunday in Melbourne.

World No.1 Serena Williams, heavy and borrowed as reduced by a back injury, was eliminated in the fourth round of the Australian Open by Ana Ivanovic, head N.14 series in three sets 4 -6, 6-3, 6-3 on Sunday in Melbourne.

This is another disappointment for the U.S. to Melbourne, where she has become five times (2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010). She had already been eliminated in the round there two years by Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova in the quarter and last year by the American Sloane Stephens.

The younger of the Williams sisters will have to wait to get a 18th Grand Slam title and imitate Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova.

She had approached the tournament with the ultra-favorite status after dominating the head and shoulders the last two seasons, winning four Grand Slam tournaments (Wimbledon 2012, U.S. Open 2012 and 2013, Roland Garros 2013) the 2012 Olympics and the Masters twice.

Since the previous edition of the Australian Open, she had known only three defeats in 80 games, two of which suffered face Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, World No.2.

But on Sunday, Serena, who remained on 25 straight victories, has evolved far from his best. Blame it on a back pain which she confirmed after the match that disturbed the last few days.

“I was ok, I was not the best but ok,” she has said, careful not to devalue the victory Ana Ivanovic. “I just tried to do the best possible. Maybe I was not the best physically, but she played very well, and I do not want to use it as an excuse. ”

“I do not know what I’m back, it lasts for a few days, but nothing fatal,” said she said. “It will get better. I just need a few days of rest and unfortunately I do not have that luxury in a Grand Slam. ”

A Resurrection For Ana Ivanovic:

Ana Ivanovic, former world No.1 in 2008, was perfectly his chance against a player that she had never taken a single set in four games.

It is a resurrection for the Serb, who since his victory at Roland Garros in 2008 had reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament only once, at the U.S. Open 2012.

Mentally fragile,Ana Ivanovic had lost confidence in his game, dropping to 65th place worldwide in July 2010. It rose gradually in the standings and since the beginning of the week, she offered her best tennis.

“It’s incredible. I just wanted to try to play the best, “responded the Serb.” I was very strong, it is not easy to play someone like Serena. But it is also human and I know she has a lot of pressure. ”

Ana Ivanovic has managed the feat of reverse after losing the first set. The American had hitherto lost one game out of 51 in the Australian Open after winning the first race: last year against Stephens.

The Serbian has consistently attacked the U.S. in return for service. Slow in his movements, Serena committed numerous unforced errors (31 to 22 strokes winners) and avoided a heavier thanks to its ability to tighten the game at key moments defeat.

Finalist at the Australian Open in 2008, Ana Ivanovic has a good chance to go further in the tournament, as it will face in the quarter a lower ranked player and less experienced it, the Canadian Eugenie Bouchard (N.30) or Australian Casey Dallacqua (World 120th).
